Niger : A "children's crisis" unfolds in West and Central Africa's Sahel Region (27 december 2011)

NEW YORK, USA, 27 December 2011 – Even as the battle against hunger continues in the drought-hit Horn of Africa, another crisis has begun to unfold in eight countries across West Africa.

More than a million children in the Sahel region of West and Central Africa are at risk of becoming severely malnourished. Inadequate rain, poor harvests and rising food prices have left hundreds of thousands of children vulnerable and weak.

Disaster Risk Management Strategy in West Africa and the Sahel (FAO, 2011-2013)

Every year, countries of the West Africa and Sahel subregion are adversely affected by natural disasters, such as droughts and floods, as well as transboundary animal diseases, economic crises and civil conflicts. These events result in losses of life, assets and livelihoods, consequently weakening the food and nutrition security of the populations. Given the increasing frequency and complexity of such crises, a holistic approach is needed.

Disasters : ECOWAS stepping up response

ABUJA, 13 July 2011 (IRIN) - Following years of discussion, representatives from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are now testing joint disaster responses in light of increased flooding and more severe droughts in West Africa over the past decade, according to the African Centre of Meteorological Application for Development (ACMAD).
